What went down at the MK Awards

After watching the MK Awards from my not-so-comfy couch at home last year, I was mighty chuffed to get the chance to go this year's event which took place last night at the State Theatre in Pretoria.

In case you missed it: the list of winners (and my two cents worth).
Bittereinder's Jaco van der Merwe and Straatligkinders frontman Bouwer Bosch hosted the awards, and their witty repartee was quite amusing to watch. Other presenters included last year's host, Jack Parow as well as Toya Delazey and Shane Durrant. I find the last one quite ironic, considering Desmond & The Tutus have been snubbed since their inception, but the audience burst out laughing each time Shane dryly read off the teleprompter, insuring that he quickly became not only a crowd favourite, but a Twitter favourite too.

Performances:
Bittereinder kicked things off with their performance of “Die Woud”, which featured Magdalene Minnaar’s chillingly ethereal vocals. Iso emerged from beneath the stage to perform a medley of sorts. It would simply be a crime not to mention the band’s meticulously styled hair in this here blog post, so there it is. Living up to the hype that has surrounded them, Afrikaans folk rock band, Spoegwolf, delivered a solid show. Tailor wowed everyone with another one of her intense performances while Van Coke Kartel once again proved why they are awards favourites. Jaco van der Merwe and Bouwer Bosch performed “Kanker”, a tribute to a friend who has just passed away from cancer. As winners of the Best Live Act category, Black Cat Bones ended things off, confirming that they are a live act to beat. Man, I’m so glad that these chaps have finally gotten the credit they deserve.

Although I'm not entirely convinced of the merits of a viewer-voting system for an awards show, this year's MK Awards was well put together and heaps of fun. The Tomato watches we got as gifts were pretty rad too.

You can never have enough Lark

A video of Lark at Arcade Empire by Blimp Films. I'm hoping that it will convey to you just how awesome they are!

In other news, I turned 21 on Thursday. I didn't plan on doing too much but this whole weekend has ended up being devoted to celebrating. On Thursday night, I went to the PHFat album launch and last night was Two Door Cinema Club in Joburg. Tonight I'm going to Tashas and tomorrow it's lunch with the family. I'll do a proper post once I've regained the hours of lost sleep. Hope you are all having a splendid weekend!

Tricksy

LARK & YESTERDAY'S PUPIL- ARCADE EMPIRE
I love words. I love how they sound. I love how when you put them all together, they tell a little story. Most of all, I love the pictures they are able to paint in your imagination.
As much as I adore words, there is just no way that I could sufficiently describe Friday night for you unless you were there, so I apologize in advance. Yesterday's Pupil got the crowd warmed up for Lark. I'd like to think of Peach van Pletzen as the King Midas of the South African music industry- everything he touches turns to gold. Yesterday's Pupil is no exception. Peach played his new song, 'The Beast', which features Tumi Molekane. What a remarkable collaboration. If you haven't downloaded the new Yesterday's Pupil, I suggest you get on it pronto by going here. It's all kinds of greatness.
Then it was time for Lark. Watching this band is something of an out of body experience. Paul Rez pounding on the drum reminds me of some sort of ancient tribal dance that Inge Beckmann joins in on. Her vocal range is just incredible. I looked around me to see the audience's reaction to the infectious music. It's like we were all part of a trance. Lark does that to you though. It's just mind-blowing. I walked out of Arcade Empire in a bit of a daze, not really knowing what to do with myself but smiling contently from ear to ear. What a show.

"I just want to sing, I love you baby"

Today's Song of the Day is The Garden, by Mirah. It reminds me a bit of one of the most epic South African bands,  Lark. Speaking of Lark, they're playing tonight at Arcade Empire. Hells yes. What a way to end the week. Arcade, your lineups have been making me very happy indeed. Thank you kindly.
